About Mazandaran: Valley of the Giants

Mazandaran Province is located on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. This province is adjacent to the Alborz mountain range. About the Climate of Mazandaran

Mazandaran World Heritage Sites

Mazandaran Province offers two world heritage sites: Mount Damavand and the Hyrcanian forests.

Hyrcanian Forests

The forested massif of the Hyrcanian forests stretches 850 km along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Dating back 25-50 million years, these forests used to cover most of the North temperate region. These ancient forest areas retreated during the Quaternary glaciations and then expanded again as the climate became milder. In the Hyrcanian forests, 180 species of birds and 58 mammal species have been recorded, including the iconic Persian Leopard.

Mount Damavand

As the highest point in Iran, Mount Damavand is an inactive volcanic mountain that was activated in the Quaternary Period. The peak of Damavand is covered by snow during the entire year. Numerous thermal springs are on this mountain including the Larijan thermal spring. The Flora and Fauna are rich and include about 2000 plant species.
