The construction of this complex, covering an area of 28.5 hectares with 28,000 m2 superstructure, was commenced in 1928 and the hospital opened its door to patients in 1313 under the name of shahreza infirmary. Originally, it consisted of 100 beds and specialized wards for internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, pediatrics, infectious diseases, maternity wards, clinics, laboratories, radiology, dentistry, animal dissection, and related departments. In 1945, otolaryngology ward added and by 1948-49, the hospital admission capacity was increased to 250 beds. Back in 1862, the hospital’s surgical department was led by Dr. Bull Van. This compassionate Belgian doctor, who converted to Islam after learning about the illuminating teachings of Islam, practiced medicine in this hospital for several years. In those years, the hospital was host to 45 attending physicians including 1 dentist, 6 pharmacists, 18 MDs, 270 nurses and 5 midwives, who handled the hospital’s medical affairs.
Today, Imam Reza Hospital, as a general first-class hospital, represents one of the leading educational and medical centers of Iran. In addition to therapeutic services offered to patients, this center acts as a medical educational/research base and a training center for medical students at the specialized and sub-specialized programs, and every year several stagers, interns, and residents receive clinical training under the supervision of heads of different departments.
